Our sustainable working method

Sustainability

For Skepparholmen, sustainability is a central and tangible part of our operations. Through structured and dedicated efforts, we focus on health and the environment to drive long-term change.

It is said that “he who plants a tree has not lived in vain.” At Skepparholmen, we carry forward the legacy of timber merchant Francke, who in the 1800s established our park with magnificent oaks, lindens, beeches, and more exotic tree species. This lush greenery, combined with our scenic location between the sea and the lake, creates a harmonious environment where nature takes center stage.

Since 2008, our green approach has been a fundamental part of who we are. We are proud to be Green Key certified and to offer a restaurant that serves MSC- and ASC-certified fish along with a wide range of vegetarian and organic options. Our care also extends beyond Skepparholmen through partnerships with Maskrosbarn, Nattvandrarna, and the Swedish Sea Rescue Society—collaborations that strengthen our social responsibility and contribute to a better future for both people and the planet.

Maskrosbarn

At Skepparholmen, we are committed to making a positive difference, not only for the environment but also for society. One of our key partnerships is with Maskrosbarn, a non-profit organization that supports children and young people living in challenging home environments due to parental addiction, mental illness, or violence.

Through this collaboration, we contribute to creating brighter futures for these young individuals by supporting initiatives that provide safe spaces, mentorship, and opportunities for personal growth. This partnership is a natural extension of our commitment to responsibility and sustainability.

Swedish Sea Rescue Society

Safety on the water is a vital concern for many, and the Swedish Sea Rescue Society is one of Sweden’s most significant organizations in maritime rescue. With the help of dedicated volunteers and donations, they provide swift responses in emergencies and contribute to safety on our seas and lakes.

At Skepparholmen, we are proud of our partnership with the Swedish Sea Rescue Society. By supporting their work, we are part of a larger effort to save lives and enhance safety for both local residents and visitors to Sweden’s unique marine environments. Together, we strive to create security and care in our community.

Honey from Skepparholmen

At Skepparholmen, we cherish nature and its gifts. We have our own beehives, where our industrious bees produce honey of the highest quality. This locally produced honey is used in our operations and is also available for purchase, allowing our guests to take home a piece of Skepparholmen. It is our way of contributing to biodiversity while offering a natural and sustainable product.

We strive for the smallest
possible environmental impact

A few examples

  • The energy supply is fossil-free. Ground source heating is used for the building and pools, supplemented by biodiesel.
  • The building dates back to the 1960s, but large investments have led to efficient operation and water usage.
  • Chemicals are used sparingly, and the products used for washing and cleaning are environmentally certified.
  • A tam-beehive, “Air Bee&Bee,” for wild bees, and flower beds promote pollination and biodiversity.

Environmental policies

  • Skepparholmen offers meeting and hotel services, restaurant, and spa for both business and private guests.
  • An active environmental work is a prerequisite for sustainable development for Skepparholmen and the environment in which we operate.
  • Skepparholmen’s facility and services shall be adapted and carried out with consideration for our inner and outer environment.
  • We shall comply with the applicable government requirements regarding the external and internal environment in all service provisions.
  • We shall also meet the requirements set by the environmental certifications MSC and ASC.
  • We are committed to continually improving our work process by conserving resources, using equipment and products that have minimal impact on the environment, and preventing pollution and illness in humans.
  • When choosing between two otherwise equivalent products/services, an environmentally certified product shall always be selected. If this alternative does not exist, then the product/service with the least risk of environmental pollution shall be chosen.
